Long History
Forgotten Voyages
Welcome to our 'Forgotten Voyages'. There are two here: After Magellan and The Hunt for the Missing Captain. Details of the two 'Forgotten Voyages' overlap but they are completely separate journeys. They both involve some of the earliest attempts by Europeans to cross the Pacific.
1. After Magellan.
This voyage was the first Spanish expedition to attempt to cross the Pacific and reach the spice islands after Magellan’s famous journey. It was headed by Commander García Jofre de Loaisa, and this account was written by Captain Andrés de Urdaneta, a friar and explorer who took part in the expedition.
The journey began on 24 July 1525 and the account continues to include the crew's decade on the Spice Islands, before their return to Europe in 1536.
2. The Hunt for the Missing Captain.
After the above journey, initially led by Loasa, came this journey, headed by Saavedra. He crossed the Pacific in search of news of Loaisa but instead found a completely different man leading the expedition.
